Interactive Video Services: Western Nevada College Library & Media Services

Walt Lewis WNC interactive video (IAV) classes are held in multiple locations “live” via video conferencing equipment with the instructor at one site or campus. Students participate in the class in “real time” - both verbally and visually. Classes are transmitted from the Carson, Fallon or Douglas campus to other campuses and WNC affiliated rural centers, including: Fernley, Hawthorne, Lovelock, Smith Valley, and Yerington.

Donna Redfern (445-4245) oversees scheduling interactive video delivery and coordination among all WNC sites. Walt Lewis is the primary contact for the rural sites.

*The Carson City Campus also has a mobile unit that can be used in the Dini conference room, library presentation room, and Marlette Hall. There is NO video conferencing capability in the Aspen Buiding.

What is an interactive video class?

Where are the interactive video classrooms?

WNC interactive video rooms are located on the Carson City, Fallon, and Douglas campuses as well as Fernley, Hawthorne, Lovelock, Smith Valley, and Yerington where they are located at high schools, community centers, and a few hospitals. Specific classroom locations, phone, and fax numbers are listed above.

Can the community use the IAV video conferencing facilities?

The WNC video conferencing facility usage policy outlines the requirements for non-college usage and fees. After reading the usage policy, you may schedule a video conferencing classroom.

How would I sign up to teach an IAV class?

Any WNC instructor who wishes to teach a class via interactive video should contact his/her division chair.

What type of equipment is available in each classroom?

Transmit Sites (Carson, Douglas, Fallon) have the following equipment:

Computer
- enables lecturers to present powerpoints and other computer files and web pages to the IAV screen
VCR/DVD Player
- Allows video presentations as part of the class.
Document Camera (Elmo)
- allows instructors to place any document or object on this unit and it will be displayed on the video screen (similar to an overhead projector)

Is there someone in the IAV classroom to support the instructor and troubleshoot equipment?

Most faculty members teaching a class have a classroom facilitator. The receive sites may have either a facilitator or instructional support as arranged by the local coordinator.
