For academic purposes, even if the image is freely available, you still must cite the image according the citation style assigned.

  Free high-res stock images; public image archive for creative work

  Exchange for using and contributing free stock images.
• Pexels
  Free stock images and video browse-able by color and collection.
• Pixabay
  1.9+ million royalty-free stock images with the ability to discover images by category and color.
• Raw Pixel
  Royalty-free stock images as well as high resolution public domain images available for creative reuse.

Library, Museum, and Archive Images

• The Commons by Flickr
  Images from archives, museums, libraries and research centers such as the New York Public Library, Smithsonian, Library of Congress and Getty Research Institute. The images have no known copyright restrictions.
• Archive.org
  Extensive website containing free eBooks, images, video, audio, and other media to view and download. Also includes the Internet Wayback Machine, for accessing archived, past versions of websites.
• The British Library - Public Domain Images
  Over 1 million images taken from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books, including illustrations, maps, photos and advertisements. All images are downloadable and without copyright restrictions.
• Digital Public Library of America
  A portal to millions of digital images, media and texts from America's libraries, museums, and archives.
• LIFE Photo Archive - Google
  Millions of photographs from the LIFE magazine photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today
• NYPL Digital Collections
  Over 700,000 items digitized from the New York Public Library's collection including maps, photos, manuscripts, poster, and illustrations.
• Wellcome Images

  The Wellcome Library of Medical History provides images on themes ranging from medical and social history to contemporary healthcare and biomedical science. Many of the images have creative commons licenses allowing re-use.
