How To: Find Sources

Use the tabs below to find information and links on finding different types of sources.

News Wire Services

A news wire service--also known as a news agency or wire service--is an organization that generates news reports and sells them to other reporting agencies, such as newspapers, magazines, television broadcast programs, and digital news reporting sites. The majority of news reports come from stories originally reported by the wire services, making them an excellent source to consult. However, as with any resource, be sure to evaluate any information and reporting for bias.

There are over a dozen different wire services, based around the world, but the librarians at WNC recommend starting with the following:

  • Reuters
Reuters is one of the largest and most well-known news agencies in the world and is based in the United Kingdom.
  • Agence France-Presse
AFP is the oldest news reporting and distribution agency in the world. It is based in Paris, France and is a state run agency.
  • Associated Press
The Associated Press (AP), founded in 1846, is a non-profit news agency, headquartered in New York.

Alternative News Sources

An alternative press, often called an independent press, "is a small entity which is not controlled by corporations that dominate the publishing industry... Alternative press publications often address important social issues and publish innovative and experimental works largely ignored or covered superficially in the mainstream press." (ODLIS, the Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science)
