All reserve materials must have copyright permission or fall within the fair use guidelines. The reference staff will assist faculty in determining fair use and if there are any costs associated with using selected materials for reserves (the concerns are the same for Canvas related postings and traditional reserves). To get you started, here's a copyright guide to fair use and a guide created by the WNC librarians about copyright and fair use.
The print reserve collection, located in the RESERVES room, near the front of the library, consists of course materials placed in the library by faculty that they feel will benefit their students. Reserve materials may include: current textbooks, journal articles, sample research papers, answer keys, supplemental readings, videos, or CDs. These items are placed on limited loan periods ranging from a "2-hour in-library use only" to a "7-day check out", depending on the instructor's request.
Please also see the instructions on how to embed materials in Canvas.
To request materials be placed on reserve for a course, please fill out the form below.
If you have multiple materials to be placed on reserve and want them to have different check out timeframes, please indicate the check out time on the list of materials. You may choose between 1 hour (in library use), 2 hour (in library use), 2 hour and overnight, 1 day, 2 days, or 7 days. Custom check out timeframes are not available.
Please note that all reserve materials will be removed from the reserve room on the last day of the semester, unless otherwise specified on the request form, and instructors will be contacted to retrieve any materials that they personally own. If they are not retrieved from the library before the beginning of the next semester, materials will be returned via interoffice mail.
